Why I love Wednesday

Currently in my life right now there are two major reasons why I look forward to Wednesdays, Comic book day and D&D night at Misty. (A third will be Lost once the new season starts up again)

So today I am gonna talk about comics, mainly about Superheroes. Ever since I was a small kid I loved comics. I am not sure if it was because of the big bundle my brother had (which I still have) or because of the cheesy Batman TV series I would watch when going over to my Grandmother's house. She had cable. Cable was cool. Back then I would get Batman and Spiderman whenever I could afford 25 cents at the grocery store. I wish they were still that price! We are talking early 80's comics before the Crisis. Superheroes always did the right thing and the bumbling villains always lost in the end. As a kid that was great! Now comics have changed.

Somewhere after the Crisis, probably about mid 90's Comics grew up or at the least target audience did. The Anti-hero grew in fame this decade with Spawn, Venom and Hellboy to name a couple. I didn't get many comics in that time period as I was now of age and spent what money I had on more important grown up things, like Beer! But this is the era where things got a little more mature, stories got a little more sophisticated.

Fast Forward to today and the maturing of comics has gone even farther to the point where I am not sure I would want my (future) child to even read them until a much older age. I like some of the cartoons on the TV now depicting superheroes (Justice League and Teen Titans are both pretty good and so was Batman Animated Series) but the comics have really started to become "gritty".

I guess I matured with the comics as I love the stories with flawed heroes, or heroes that make mistakes, or being outwitted by the villains sometimes. DC Comics is putting out some great stories right now that is hopefully a sign to come in future years. It looks like I made a good choice in when to return to buying regular comics. They have a vision where the DC Universe is going to head starting almost 2 years ago and stretching for more than a year ahead from now. People can complain that they don't like the direction comics is heading in, or complain that a certain character acts different than they did in the 80's, but I respect them for have a grand planned out purpose and getting all the writers and drawers to agree on it.

They have hooked me on the stories right now. Wednesday is here, but I have to wait until after noon before the comic book store opens!
